先月は記事を掲載することができませんでした。　今日は気分一新、アメリカバイソンについてお話させてください。

多分アメリカバイソンについて聞いたことがおありでしょう。  You may perhaps have heard of American Bison.

ウシ科に属する北米大陸では一番大きな動物です。　They are the largest animal on the North American Continent belonging to the cow family.

かつては5000万頭ものバイソンがいましたが、18世紀から19世紀にかけてその数は極端に減ってしまい、絶滅の危機に瀕してしまいました。　Once there lived as many as 50 million bisons, but number of them drastically discreased during 18th and 19th centuries.  They were in danger of going extinct.

実際、絶滅危惧種に指定されてしまいました。　Actually, they were designated as endangered species.

こんなことが起こったのは次のような原因からです。　This happened because of the following reasons.

まず、肉や毛皮のために乱獲されました。　First, they were excessively hunted for meat and furs.

次に娯楽のためだけの狩りの対象になりました。　Next, they were hunted only for pleasure.

のちに、狩猟は禁止されて今はイエローストーン国立公園にある保護区で保護されています。　Later, hunting was forbidden and now they are protected in the sunctuary in The Yellowstone National Park.

その数は50万頭と言われています。　They say the present number of this animal is 500,0０0.

ここに注目してみて！

go extinct で絶滅する、ある状態になるということを表す go です。好ましくないことに使われます。　例えば：

彼は気が狂った。  He went mad.  (怒り狂ったという意味もあり）

大手の銀行が倒産した。　　The large bank went bankrupt.

夏場はミルクがすぐ腐ります。　Milk goes bad soon in summer.

彼は禿げてきてるんじゃない？　Is he going bald, isn’t he?
