今年最初の話題はコンビニエンスストアです。日本にコンビニが生まれておよそ50年、今やそれなしの生活が考えられないほどです。

フランチャイズのコンビニ、セブンイレブンの一号店が東京の豊洲にオープンしたのは1974年のことだそうです。　　I hear the first franchise convenience store, Seven Eleven,　opened at Toyosu, Tokyo in 1974.

名前の由来は朝の7時から夜11時まで営業したからです。　The reason why it was named was their business hours , from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

当時そんなに長く営業している店はありませんでした。　Those days, there were no stores opening so long.

翌年、ローソンが続き、ちょっと遅れて1978年に3番手のファミリーマートがオープンしました。　Next year, Lawson followed, and a little later in 1978 Family Mart, the third largest, opened.

今や、終夜営業のコンビニは当たり前ですし、おまけに年中無休です。　Nowadays,  no wonder we see around-the-clock convenience stores.

Besides,  they never close.

今は、生まれた時からコンビニを知っている人が大部分なんですけど、当時はその出現、画期的な出来事でした。　Today, the majority of people have known convenience stores since they were born, but at that time,  the appearance of those stores was an epock-making event.

家に帰る途中でちょっと1件寄るだけで食べ物をはじめ日常の必需品ほとんどが手に入りました。　Just by dropping in a store on the way home, we could get most of our daily necessities as well as food.

最初、これらの店は若者のためと考えられていましたけれど、高齢者もこれは便利なものだとすぐに気づきました。　At first , we thought those stores were for young people, but it wasn't long before aged people also realized they were so helpful.

今は一人暮らしの高齢者が増えていますから、レンジでチンするかボイルするだけで食べられるお惣菜は特に魅力的です。　Now that more and more senior people live alone,  prepared dishes are especially attractive.  All we have to do is microwave or boil them.

味も品質もどんどん良くなっています。　The taste and quality are getting better and better.
