外国に行ったり、外国人と話したりすると、自分の国について考えることが多くなります。質問されて自分の知識が足りないなと恥ずかしく思ったこともありましたっけ。数字を挙げて説明するとよくわかってもらえるということも学びました。今日はそんな心がけで私たちの国について話題にしてみましょう。

ご存じだと思いますけど、日本はちっぽけな島国です。　You may probably know Japan is a small island country.
どのくらい島があるか、想像おできになるかしら。　Can you imagine how may islands Japan has?
大体1,400もあるそうですよ。　They say as many as about 14,000.
国土は山が多くて三分の2は森林です。　The land is mountainous, and two-thirds is covered with forests.
殆どの川はどちらかというと短くて流れが速いです。　Most rivers are rather short and rapid.
渓谷の美しさは私たちだけでなく外国人旅行者にとってもとても魅力的です。　Beautiful valleys and mountains are so attractive not only to us but also to foreign tourists.
日本の人口は大体アメリカの半分、一憶2,000万です。　Japan has a population of about half of the United States, one hundred and twenty million.
狭い国土に人口の多さ、人口密度は世界有数です。 Small land and large population means population density is one of the largest in the world.
国民は主に沿岸か平野部に住んでいます。　People mainly live along the coasts and on plains.
関東平野は一番広い平野で、東京や横浜といった代表的な都市はここにあります。　　The Kanto Plain is the largest and representative cities like Tokyo and Yokohama are there.

今日のポイント：
10万人もの人々が広場に結集しました。 As many as 100 thousand people got together at the plaza.
彼は一日ボトル1本ものウイスキーを飲んでいました。　He used to drink as much as a bottle of whisky a day.
アメリカは日本の26倍の広さがあります。　The United State is twenty-six times as large as Japan.
東京は私が住んでいる都市の5倍の人口があります。　Population of Tokyo is five times as large as that of the city where I live.
　
場所や家などの広さ, 人口の多さを言う時は large を使います。(wide は幅があるだけで奥行きがありません)
