ある日、一人の友達が生まれて間もない子犬を連れてきました。　One day, a friend of mine brought a new-born puppy.
私を見た途端、その仔は私の所にやってきて、私たちがおしゃべりをしている間に私の膝の上で眠ってしまいました。　The moment it looked at me, the puppy came to me and fell asleep on my lap while we were having a chat.
その日、友達はただその仔を見せるだけのつもりだったのですが、そのまま置いて帰ることにしました。　My friend just intended to show it to me, but decided to leave it that day.
こんな風にして、すでにクッキーという名がついていた茶色の犬はうちの家族の一員になりました。　In this way, this brown dog already named Cookie became a member of our family.(＊）
犬というものはペット以上の存在です。　A dog is more than a pet.
犬だけが人の顔をまっすぐに見つめることができる動物だってこと、ご存じですか？　　Do you know dogs are the only animal that can look us right in the eye?
そして私たちが何を考えているのか、喜び、悲しみ、怒りさえも理解することができます。　They can understand what are in our mind - pleasure, sorrow and even anger.
犬はたくさんの慰めや喜びを与えてくれて、共に生きる仲間となることができます。　Giving us a lot of comfort and joy, they can be real good companions to live with.
近隣に友達がいなくてさみしいと思う人は犬を飼うべきです。　If you feel lonely having no friends in the neighborhood, you should keep a dog.
毎日、犬を散歩させなさい。そうすれば　あなたの犬がほかの犬の飼い主と友達になることを助けてくれるでしょう。　Walk your dog, and it will help you make friends with other dog owners. (walk には散歩させるという他動詞用法もあります)
