実は、フランス人の探検家が現地の人の案内によって19世紀半ばにアンコールワットを再発見したんです。 The fact is that a French explorer rediscovered Angkor Wat guided by local people in the middle of 19th century.
そこからこの場所が広くヨーロッパに知られるようになったんです。 Then the place came to be widely known to Europe.
一方、一人の日本人が17世紀に参拝に訪れていたって言う面白い事実があります。 Meanwhile, we can learn a surprising fact that a Japanese had visited these temples in the 17th century.
どうしてそんなことわかるのでしょう？ How can we know that?
彼は柱の一本に「私はここに来ました」と落書きを残しているんです。 He left a graffiti on one of the pillars saying ”I’m here."
今なら褒められない所業ですが彼は自分の名前と日付もしたためていたようです。 What he did is not to be praised nowadays, but I understand he added his name and date.
名前は森本右近太夫、実在の人物、宮大工の息子だったそうです。 His name was Morimoto Ukondayu, and they say he was a real person, a son of a shrine carpenter.
なんで彼ははるばるこの地を訪ねる気になったのでしょう。 What made him want to visit this remote place all the way?
当時、日本ではアンコールワットは祇園精舎として知られていたんですって。 I hear Angkor Wat was known to Japan as ’Gion Shojya’ at that time.
